To set the ball rolling after a really long time, I start off with some self written urdu shayiri .......

Dur kahin gili mitti me sulagti hai chingari, use mai shola bana sakun mai wo hawa to nahi ...
Yun to aasman se bhi unchi hain unchaiyan, mai unchaiyon ko neecha dikha sakun mai wo ghata to nahi ...
Aur kehte hain ki dil ka aaina hote hain chehre , mai chehre badal sakun mai wo khuda to nahi ...

I am not a great writer, but as "they" so emphatically state "listening and appreciating is an art ",
I do have an ear for poetry in hindi and urdu ..
The two languages, their nuances and "nuktas" have always titillated my ears and mind ...
I here list a few selected shayiris and couplets which have had a profound impact on me ....
The first is RamPrasad Bismil's composition which no wonder was revolutionary to say the least ...

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai Dekhna hai zor kitna baazu-e-qaatil mein hai

Aye watan, Karta nahin kyun doosra kuch baat-cheet Dekhta hun main jise who chup teri mehfil mein hai Aye shaheed-e-mulk-o-millat main tere oopar nisaar Ab teri himmat ka charcha ghair ki mehfil mein hai Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Waqt aanay dey bata denge tujhe aye aasman Hum abhi se kya batayen kya hamare dil mein hai Khainch kar layee hai sab ko qatl hone ki ummeed Aashiqon ka aaj jumghat koocha-e-qaatil mein hai Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Hai liye hathiyaar dushman taak mein baitha udhar Aur hum taiyyaar hain seena liye apna idhar Khoon se khelenge holi gar vatan muskhil mein hai Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Haath jin mein ho junoon katt te nahi talvaar se Sar jo uth jaate hain voh jhukte nahi lalkaar se Aur bhadkega jo shola-sa humaare dil mein hai Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Hum to ghar se nikle hi the baandhkar sar pe kafan Jaan hatheli par liye lo barh chale hain ye qadam Zindagi to apni mehmaan maut ki mehfil mein hai Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Yuun khadaa maqtal mein qaatil kah rahaa hai baar baar' Kya tamannaa-e-shahaadat bhi kisee ke dil mein hai Dil mein tuufaanon ki toli aur nason mein inqilaab Hosh dushman ke udaa denge humein roko na aaj Duur reh paaye jo humse dam kahaan manzil mein hai Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai

Wo jism bhi kya jism hai jismein na ho khoon-e-junoon Toofaanon se kya lade jo kashti-e-saahil mein hai

Chup khade hain aaj saare bhai mere khaamosh hain Na karo to kuchh kaho mazhab mera mushkil mein hai

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai. Dekhna hai zor kitna baazuay qaatil mein hai.

Profoundly used in Indian films , the version in Anurag Kashyap's Gulaal also deserves a mention
as though it altered the original lines, in today's context it is a better call for revolution with a heavy dosage of satire....

Another underrated urdu shayar/ poet is Dushyant Kumar. I won't wax eloquent about his genre and style but would just quote him and rest my case ...

ho gayii phir parbat-sii pighalanii chaahiye
is himaalay se koii gangaa nikalanii chaahiye

aaj ye diivaar pardon kii tarah hilane lagii
shart lekin thii ki buniyaad hilanii chaahiye

har sadak par har galii me har nagar har gaaon me
haath leharaate huye har laash chalanii chaahiye

sirf hangaamaa khadaa karanaa meraa maqsad nahiin
merii koshish ye hai ki ye suurat badalanii chaahiye

mere siine mein nahiin to tere siine mein sahii
ho kahiin bhii aag lekin aag jalanii chaahiye

Dont think I can fit all of my "selected few" in this post ....

Would continue in the next post ...
Till then , cheers....

God has His ways , but this strange ....

I am incorrigible : each time i publish a post , i "pledge " that i would keep this space dirty with my scribblings .......
This is my third post in 4 months or so ....
Need i say more ...
Anyways , for starters Happy New Year !!! Sincerely hoping that this year would turn dreams to reality and sweat to success .....
Well , as it happens , after a long time i watched a lot of movies ......( was busy with "friends " before this time ) , one of which deserves a mention ( not that it was the best movie i saw around this time but just that it had stirred a lot of attention and a lot of "hysteria" ) .
Rab ( God) ne bana di jodi can easily qualify as the most "miraculous " love story of our times ...
Romantic plots are SRK's forte and the machoistic phrases of proclaiming himself as "The King " that he dishes out every now and then , are heard only because of the sensisitive and sweet portrayal of "the champion of love " . Most of love stories that can be envisaged in an Indian prospective should have been "Been There , Done That " kind of stuff for him ...
But , this movie defies logic and the domain of love . It has been criticised enough for the wife not being able to recognize her hubby sans his moustache ( Aamir , dont you think you can "work out " a script that focuses on this "disabled recognition memory " disease for your next movie ??) and i am all praise for the critics ( Masand and TOI ) for this .
But mind you ,she also can give serious competion to unicellulars if it comes to intelligence . She dint realiase that it could only be his "punjab power " husband who can make the city lights go on and off to display " I LOVE YOU " all across Amritsar and not the "cannot ride scooty" garage owner Raj ..
But , all this amounts to nothing , for there is divine intervention . The non heroic , not "common man" ( common man arenot that dumb, watch slumdog if you dont trust me ) , suddenly has sun shining behind him in the backdrop of The Golden Temple and Anushka suddenly sees "Rab " in him . I really thought i had a bad cd and had missed about 20 mins of the movie when i saw the sudden transformation in Anushka .
But , then I hear on the MTVs and all , that girls are "crazy " about Suri 's character all over the "world " ......and then i was a believer ....
Just kidding :) ....
The movie had good songs .... ummm
Cant think of more positive points ( i suffer from this "mental inablility to see the positives of SRK's movies " syndrome .... ) .
But the director , he gave us great love stories like DDLJ , if he can see "Rab" we must be a believer ( Did somebody say he is divorced ???) .
Anyways , keypads were never that mighty enough that they can shake SRK's popularity and this one boasts of "God" involved ...
May this year bring more power to "the keyboard " and better films than Rab Ne ...

Cheers ....

MONDAY BLUES

I had been planning to start a blog since quite some time .However , I was lacking the requisite motivation.

And since I am writing this post, the motivation did finally come (I will divulge the details ).

Monday morning , preceded by 3 continuous holidays, and a frustrating placement session, was

as bad as it can get. morning was all about beating the clock and attending 2 redundant lectures ,the

common thread between the lectures being that both the discoursers ( pun intended) rely on the philosophy that common sense is most uncommon.

The mess lunch did its best to dampen my spirits further but could not deprive me of my smile.

The Dsp class followed :50+8 minutes of pretension that I m following all that is being talked about .

It was fun , however . I soon realized that it is not only we, the students but even our dearest prof

Mr. you know who( by the way, why do all unreasonable objects get abbreviated as GS????????? ) was unsure of the “basics” which he preached to us .( He says , it is essential to master these in order to “compete” in the TCS Placement interviews.)

And yes , if any well wisher of Mr. you know who is listening , please buy that man a watch, get it synchronized with the BIT timings and put some alarm mechanism so that it reminds him when the class gets over officially.

So, the motivation ……..

It was the microprocessor lab , instructions were clear and stringent……

You need to know telepathy …

I know I m paraphrasing it , actually the instructions were :

“Thou shalt not look at the teacher, nor call him , nor stand up to get noticed , nor resort to any other suggestive gesture to capture the teachers attention, in order to get your programs checked.”

Well , I m sorry “Mr. I walk around a single point” , but I broke it.

After sitting idly for about 2 2 mins, I committed the cardinal sin …...,”sir “ I called out.

So, I was suitably reprimanded as befits a sinner of my stature. But, again my smile refused to die down.

Next, threats followed.

But , me and my smile braved it all, the problematic 8085 simulator, the disgusting modifications , the unstated common agreement between the four invigilators (“Make everyone wait as long as you can“Pact 2008 Ref:www.ecebit.org/unsaid policies/) ,and the presence of nerdy souls who have embarked upon programming 8085 as the mission of their lives.

So, here I am smiling as I post this.

I smile on the characters and practices around me and on the futility of it all.

And I post this so that you can smile with me.

Cheers…………..
